A survey by National Association of Colleges and Employers (2009) (in Job Outlook 2009) showed that communication skills (verbal and written) ranked first in the list of critical skills employers seek. The other areas are teamwork, interpersonal competence, and analytical skills. It is said that recruiters of top graduate school students do not just look at the “hard” knowledge that candidates possess, but the “soft” skills of communication. This “soft” skill is what distinguishes a successful candidate from others. Hence, it is necessary for people (not only graduates and job seekers) to learn how to speak confidently and convincingly in public. This Globibo Public Speaking Training will educate the participants on the rudiments of public speaking so that they will be able to shine among others, not just professionally but also personally. A great presenter has 2 notable qualities: appropriate skills and personal confidence. Confidence comes from knowing what you want to say and being comfortable with your communication skills (public speaking skills). In this 2-day workshop, participants will master the skills that will make them a better speaker and presenter.

You will spend the first part of the day getting to know participants and discussing what will take place during the workshop. Students will also have an opportunity to identify their personal learning objectives.
To begin, participants will explore key communication skills, including how to start and end a conversation/presentation; how to build on familiar skills/knowledge/experience that they already have; and how to plan conversations/presentations..
Next, participants will learn about characteristics that can make or break the audience’s impression of a speaker, including speech volume, pitch, rate, pronunciation, articulation, clichés, slang, diction, jargon, and tact (or lack thereof).
During this session, participants will explore their personality type and what it means for them as a speaker.
In this session, participants will learn how to build their self-confidence – a key skill for any public speaker.
This session will explore the idea of rapport and how it can help build relationships.
Meetings are a central part of communication and cooperation within any organization. This session will give participants some ways to successfully prepare for and present at any meeting.
During this session, participants will learn some ways to make sure their body language (e.g. facial expressions, eye contact, general body movements, etc.) is sending the right message and how to make audiences feel that the presenter genuinely seeks to connect with them.
This session will give participants some tools to deal with uncomfortable situations, how not to appear defensive/rude when snide remarks are made or meaningless questions are posed.
Next, participants will explore the value of oral presentations.
To conclude the first day, we will look at some suggestions for handling nervousness especially how seasoned public speakers make their nervousness work for them, rather than against them.
To begin the second day, participants will learn about the five S’s of a good presentation: significance, scenario, solutions, sequelae, and suggestions.
This session will focus on the nuts and bolts of creating your presentation: how the basics of writing must be adhered to for better flow of ideas in your presentation.
Next, participants will look the value of audience profiles/analysis: how to look around for hints on the audience: age group, gender, status in society (titles are a great giveaway), political affiliations, and ethnicity, etc. as this can tell them what should or should not be included in their presentations.
This session will look at the eight key parts of a presenter’s message.
There are many types of presentation/visual aids that can help the audience understand and remember key points of presentations, realise relationships between concepts/points, or even evaluate complex ideas and data more quickly. We will provide an overview of, and tips for, the most common visuals during this session.
To wrap things up, participants will prepare and present a short presentation. Participants will evaluate each other and provide constructive feedback.
At the end of the workshop, students will have an opportunity to ask questions and prepare an action plan.
